The most important questions to ask your Wedding DJ in 2019!!

Wedding planning can be one of the most fun, insane, and memorable times of you life. This will also be the one time that you’ll plan an event to bring together some of the most important people of your inner circle into one dynamic and unforgettable afternoon or evening. But while some will sit back, and enjoy this time, others will stress uncontrollably and let the thought of hiring the right person or service get the best of them. This doesn’t have to be you, right!

One of the things we see and hear most often from Brides, Grooms and Mom’s alike is that they just don’t know what questions to ask when looking for a DJ, or what information to look for. With that, we wanted to put together a few points that you should cover when it comes to questions to ask your potential Wedding DJ:

Do you have a written contract? As with the rest of your wedding vendors, do NOT proceed without a written contract. If they won’t provide one, it’s time to look elsewhere.

Can you meet the person who will be actually DJ / MC my event before you sign a contract? If you’re working with a DJ company who employs several different DJs, you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re comfortable with the actual person who’ll be at your reception.

Do they seem cool, fun, and also respectful? Are they listening to the questions you’re asking, and giving you thoughtful responses? All this will go a long way in creating a conducive and comfortable environment where you will highly benefit from a DJ who is in sync with you.

How many weddings do you do annually? This is an often-overlooked but very important question. If your DJ only does a couple of weddings a year and instead spends the majority of their time spinning tunes in clubs, bars or at birthday parties it may be worth looking for someone with a little more experience. Being a Wedding DJ is a specialist job and a club DJ just isn’t likely to have the skill or the experience to cut it (sometimes, but usually not).

Is this your full-time business? Are weddings your primary focus? What clubs, lounges, and corporate clients have you performed for in addition to weddings? Determine whether they are a well-rounded, successful entertainer who can bring a level of expertise and versatility to your event. You want to ensure that your DJ isn’t a one-dimensional part-timer, but a true performer whose had varied and extensive experience performing in front of different (and tough) audiences.

DO YOU TAKE SONG REQUESTS? Check what the protocol will be for making sure your guests hear their favorite tunes—if you even want them to have that creative control. A particular pro may prefer to get requests in certain ways (probably not shouted at them while they’re working).

DOES THE DJ SERVE AS THE HOST/MC? While playing music is the most obvious responsibility of a wedding DJ, it is certainly not the only one. Many couples don’t realize that one of the biggest responsibilities of a skilled wedding DJ is to coordinate the evening’s events as the emcee. This is the job that will make the single biggest difference between your guests remembering a wedding that was smooth and effortless or one that was awkward and clumsy.  From announcements and introductions to toasts and the first dance, there are a million little moments that need to stay on schedule.

As you can see there are a ton of questions to ponder, think about and even ask when beginning your search for that perfect Wedding DJ for your evening, but take a breath, grab an icy beverage and just breath it all in, you’ve got this!
